The system which used AI where complex decision making was needed to automate time sensitive repetitive tasks such as logging jobs, creating invoices and handling support emails.

The robots implemented allowed the team to focus on more interesting and complex work and of course robots work 24x7x265 days a year with no breaks, sickness or holidays.

Case Study 4: Domino’s Pizza – Realtime tracker

Domino’s Pizza Group plc is a United Kingdom-based master franchise of international fast food pizza delivery chain Domino’s. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. Dominos Pizza prided itself in terms of innovation, often described as an IT company and not a pizza company. Once example of an initiative driven by Colin was the real time pizza tracker;

The goals were simple:

  1. Make the drivers more efficient and hence franchisee’s more profitable
  2. Improve driver safety
  3. Improve customer service
  4. Improve store efficiency.

The initiative involved a tracking system used by the Dominoes driver, the system provided real-time updates on the driver’s location to both the customer and the store. The stores were more efficient because they could prepare for a driver’s arrival and the customers’ anxiety over when their food was going to arrive was reduced finally safety and store efficiency was improved due to the reporting provided in store on delivery times and location.

The results were significant, over a network of 1000 stores the franchisees realised a cost benefit of around £6.5m per annum.

David Wilde the Domino’s Pizza CEO said:

“On labour efficiency, our investment in GPS has been a major benefit for franchisees. Many of them have achieved cost efficiencies of greater than 0.5% of store revenue, net of the cost of deployment. Over time we expect this to lead to sales benefits and other cost savings, such as insurance.”
